The Spotted Lantern Fly

First spotted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2014, the Spotted Lantern Fly can now be found in at least 14 counties. This invasive pest poses a significant threat to state agriculture and forests. 

In the Spring of 2019, Lancaster County was placed  under quarantine.

​"The Spotted Lanternfly adult is approximately 1" long and 1/2" wide at rest. The forewing is grey with black spots and the wings tips are reticulated black blocks outlined in grey. The hind wings have contrasting patches of red and black with a white band. The legs and head are black; the abdomen is yellow with broad black bands. Immature stages are black with white spots, and develop red patches as they grow."

Pennsylvania department of agriculture is asking everyone to; join the battle & Beat the bug.

  • Before leaving a quarantine area be sure to check for spotted lanternflies on your vehicle. Be sure to check the doors & sides, grill, bumpers, wheel wells, roof, and cargo for any signs of bug. When you can try to park you vehicle away from trees.
  • Check any items stored outside for the pest before moving them to a new location. Don't forget to check lawn furniture, propane tanks, outdoor machinery, wooden pallets and shipping containers. 
  • If/When you find an egg mass you should scrape it into a plastic bag or container that contains rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer.
  • If/When you find a nymph or adult spotted lantern fly you should squash it. 
  • Report any spotted lanternflies you see, here or call 888-4-BADFLY.
