Campgrounds are not for everyone
Camping outside of a big name campground

Finding a good campsite can be harder than it seems. Some of the first places that come to mind are a National Park or Forest, State Parks or maybe a campground. The reality is, those are everyone's go to places for a camping trip.

The options for camping are not what they once were, they are limited. At least around here, the days of pulling over or picking a camping spot at random are over.  While big campgrounds seem to be a go to for camping today, a lesser known option is privately owned campsites. It is gaining more attention with modern companies and there are now app. and online platforms for making reservations at such places. They vary in their type and style, from primitive, glamping, RV and even luxury camping sites. Not too different then what the big campgrounds have to offer.

In our opinion bigger Campgrounds are geared more towards families or short stays, offering full facilities and a variety of different types of campsites.  Some have extravagant amenities and host structured activities, amusement parks or other onsite entertainment.

The more sites a campground can offer the more campers they can hold. For that reason, some have campsites that are packed in together and do not comfortably fit the usual maximum of 6 campers per site.  These are not bad things! It all depends on what you are looking for in your camping trip.

We always felt like because of the lack of camping options, bigger campgrounds set some campers up for failure before they even pitch their tents. In our opinion this camping setting is for the more "social camper", because those looking for more nature and solitude are rarely happy with their experiences there.

For some of us, camping is about stepping out of the race. A chance to slow down, gain some serenity in the peace and quiet nature has to offer, provide some solitude to self reflect and adjust perspective. A need to unpack the stresses of your daily life and breath in the fresh air. An opportunity to explore and happen upon an adventure, whatever it maybe. Sometimes a crowded campground makes this hard to achieve.
This is where a campground lets some of us down.

River Rock Recreation campsite is for the camper who is looking for solitude. The camper that wants more nature and is willing to give up some of the luxuries of a campground to achieve it. We may not be in a national/state park or forest but there is no lack of beauty to discover and spectacular adventures to be had in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. With all the small town charm, history and beautiful hidden features there is more then enough to keep you busy during your stay.

We offer a single, two acer, Susquehanna River front campsite with four tent areas, that can hold up to 10 people, comfortably. You will find limited amenities to promote an experience immersed in nature, a blend of what is desirable and necessary calls to all skill levels and styles of camping. A primitive campsite with no hook ups, electricity or running water delivers a unique rustic experience. The camp kitchen and shower area are luxuries that can rival any campground. The kitchen area features a fire ring grate, charcoal grill, sink, cooler stand/food storage area, picnic table and counter space for food preparation. The camp shower is solar shower bag compatible, meaning any store bought shower bag for camping will work. (The solar variety can provide warm water when sat in the sun for an allotted amount of time.) It isn't the case of less amenities here, it's more nature! There is plenty of space to bring your boat, outdoor games and your whole crew! Since it's only one campsite you will always be the only ones there. The river and trail can be used at your own leisure and you can participate in any outdoor recreational hobby you desire, as well as river recreational activities.

The trail, river, parks and surrounding small towns provide social interaction if you go out looking for it. There are a ton of like-minded people out there enjoying nature in their own way that you can spark conversations with. While there are opportunities to be social, they do not reside at the campsite itself. This gives the camper control over what their camping experience will be. Plan your own adventure or relax and explore, here at River Rock Recreation campsite we strive to provide campers with the unique and positive camping experience that they desire.
Leave the big campgrounds in the rearview and find the camping experience that best suits you!
Explore your options. You may have a better experience outside of everyone else's go-to camping places!
